  • Give us your elevator speech — what do you do at VolunteerMatch?

As a former Client Services Associate and newbie Marketing Manager, I help nonprofits, volunteers and companies connect with one another and engage with their communities by providing support via our Help Center and by sharing relevant knowledge through Help Center articles, Engaging Volunteers blog, GoodPeople and GoodCauses newsletters, and VolunteerMatch’s social media channels!

  • What’s the most inspiring part of your job so far?

Though we live in crazy, scary and confusing times, it’s really inspiring to get to connect with and learn from those taking action to build a better world. It’s easy to remain hopeful when you’re interacting with good people every day!

  • Which four individuals, living or dead, would you like to eat dinner with the most?

Michelle Obama, Larry David, Rihanna, and Damian Lillard.

  • If you were to start a foundation or a nonprofit, what would its mission be?

I’d start a nonprofit that seeks to tackle our nation’s literacy crisis. Research shows that simply having books at home can have a huge impact on a child’s literacy skills, so I’d create a program that gives children and young adults high quality, interesting and culturally relevant books.

  • Are you a volunteer yourself? If so, what do you do?

Yes! I volunteer as a writing tutor at 826 Valencia where I work with third-, fourth-, and fifth-graders at an afterschool program at the Buena Vista Horace Mann K-8 Community School. It’s an awesome program where volunteers help students develop their skills at all stages of the writing process — from brainstorming creative ideas to editing and prepping their pieces for publication!

It’s such a joy to see the kids’ faces when they see their words in print at the end of each semester.

  • What are your top 3 favorite books/podcasts?

Books: Anything by Toni Morrison, Haruki Murakami or Bill Bryson

Podcasts: 2 Dope Queens, My Favorite Murder, Radiolab

  • What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

I enjoy trips back home to Hawaii, cooking meals with family and friends, spending time around trees and/or water, smelling flowers, reading books and riding my bike around Oakland.

  • What’s your favorite quote?

“There’s always a little more toothpaste in the tube.” — Bill Bryson
