While the number of Americans experiencing homelessness continues to decline, the number of individuals and families who go hungry is on the rise (according to the U.S. Conference of Mayors’ Report on Hunger and Homelessness).
With nearly 9,000 homeless & housing and hunger volunteer opportunities available on VolunteerMatch, it’s clear that we still have work to do.
In addition to food-pantry-stocking and soup-kitchen-serving volunteers, hunger-fighting organizations need creative volunteers who can get their communities excited about unique campaigns. Volunteers who lend their business consulting and project management skills to help nonprofits scale. And tech geniuses who lend a hand in allocating strapped budgets to the most resourceful nonprofit software.
What if I told you these volunteers exist? Not in some fictional, “upside-down” stranger thing, but on the web and IRL. We can attest to this, because we’ve heard their stories. Real people sharing proven results.
To raise awareness and “be the voice” for volunteer managers this Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week (11/11 – 11/19), we’re sharing three of these inspiring stories from skilled volunteers fighting hunger across the country. Follow us on Instagram and refresh this blog post throughout the week to read stories as we publish them.
Oh, and by the way, these types of volunteers are waiting to help your hunger-fighting missions, if the right call is put out to finding and engaging them. Then, visit the Hunger Volunteer Connection (HVC) to learn more.
