Expert SnapshotsAt VolunteerMatch we learn so much from other experts in the field of volunteer engagement and management, and we want to help you stay up to date on the latest news and trends. Check back every month for snapshots of what experts in the field are talking about. This month we are focusing on video.

A Channel for Human Rights

Whether you’re inspired by the “Arab Spring” or you’ve seen the impact of video in your local community, it’s hard to deny the power of the moving pictures to catalyze change. WITNESS has partnered with Storyful to launch and curate a new Human Rights channel on YouTube. The channel will feature content from a slate of human rights organizations, and will hopefully shed light on and contextualize under-reported stories, record otherwise undocumented abuses, and amplify previously unheard voices.

It’s Not All about Views

One of my favorite #nptech blogs is Social Media Examiner. They may not be a nonprofit themselves, but their meaty yet readable articles provide just the type of grassroots, fee-free advice and tricks that nonprofits trying to make it in the world of online engagement really need. In this article they walk us through 8 ways we can track the performance of our YouTube videos and build community.

Focus on the What, Not the How Long

While HubSpot is technically a marketing software company (which many nonprofits would have trouble affording), their blog is a great resource for keeping up with online trends and marketing strategy. In this article they suggest that you don’t have to stick to strictly short videos – if your content is engaging enough, people will watch it no matter how long it is (think: Kony 2012.)

A Daily Dose of Good

In a previous post we mentioned the DoGooder Nonprofit Video Awards, which each year recognize the most impactful videos from around the sector. But did you know that See3 Communications also sponsors the Daily DoGooder, which highlights one nonprofit video per day. You can receive the video in your inbox or go straight to the website to be inspired and see what other organizations are doing to spread their messages with video.

Our Head Honcho Shares His Thoughts

I couldn’t resist including this one last item: At our recent 2012 Client Summit, 3BL Media recorded almost two dozen video interviews with thought leaders and corporate engagement specialists. We’ll be featuring all of the videos on the blog in the coming months, and we started things off with our own President, Greg Baldwin. In the video Greg shares his excitement for this year’s Client Summit and describes how working with corporations to engage employees over the past ten years or so has helped VolunteerMatch strengthen nonprofits and communities all across the country.
