How Has Social Media Changed Volunteer Engagement?

How has social media changed volunteer engagement? That’s what we want to know. Because on Friday, November 4th, our President Greg Baldwin will be talking about this very topic to several hundred nonprofit folks at the Social Media for Nonprofits Conference in San Francisco.

Actually, we have a bunch of ideas based on our work with many organizations, perhaps just like yours, that have had to redesign their volunteer engagement and management programs because, let’s face it, the world is a very different place post-Facebook and Twitter.

The Social Media for Nonprofits conference is one installment of the series sweeping the country and bringing nonprofit professionals together with social media experts. Unlike many other conferences, the sole focus of the day is on providing practical tools and tips so we can all go back to work and start implementing easy and often free fundraising, marketing and advocacy solutions.

And now we’re going to add “volunteer solutions” to that list. After the last San Francisco conference, we felt that there just wasn’t enough attention paid to how social media can be used for volunteer recruitment and management. After all, every nonprofit needs volunteers!

This time around, we’re getting the opportunity to tell the volunteering side of the social media story. So as Greg prepares his presentation, we want to hear from you. We want to make his talk as relevant to your needs as possible. So please, take a few minutes and leave answers to these questions in the comments or email us:

  • Do you use social media to recruit, manage, or thank volunteers? Tell us about it!
  • If you don’t use social media for this, why not?
  • What questions do you have about using social media for volunteer engagement?
