CLIF BAR GreenNotes: Helping Musicians and Fans Turn Awareness into Action

clifWith eco-awareness and the green movement reaching new heights these days, the connection between sustainability and service has never been more apparent.

Many folks who care about our planet are balancing reducing one’s environmental footprint with getting out and volunteering time for an organization working on environmental issues. Recently we’ve been helping CLIF BAR with a project that’s making it easier for music fans to do both.

Musicians, Music Fans and Environmental Awareness

Environment awareness and a love of music have been part of the DNA at CLIF BAR from the start. Three years ago, the folks at the Berkeley-based company launched a program called GreenNotes to partner with emerging musicians to help reduce the environmental impact of their tours.

Artists like Brett Dennen, Ben Kweller, Michael Franti, Ingrid Michaelson, and Josh Ritter have partnered with CLIF BAR’s GreenNotes program to receive grants, plans and technical assistance to help them adopt measures to reduce their eco-impact. These include fueling their buses with biodiesel, requesting organic foods backstage, printing collateral on recycled paper with soy-based ink, and selling organic cotton t-shirts at concerts.

CLIF BAR is also helping GreenNotes artists to create opportunities and inspiration for music fans to take action for the environment.

Since GreenNotes began, artists have removed some 2.2 million pounds of CO2 from the environment through their offsets. They’ve also eliminated the use of nearly 3,000 pounds of pesticides by selling organic cotton t-shirts, and used cleaner burning biodiesel to reduce by more than 25 percent the carbon dioxide emissions from the artists’ tour buses.

Fans, meanwhile, have pledged to remove an additional 43.3 million pounds of CO2 emissions in their own lives, the equivalent of removing nearly 4,000 vehicles from our roads for a year.

Intersection with Local Organizations

This summer CLIF BAR added our SearchLite widget to the GreenNotes page to encourage fans to get further involved in their own communities.

The widget, which is available free of charge to any company, puts a mini-VolunteerMatch search engine on any Web site. This way visitors to the GreenNotes page who have made a pledge and are inspired to take action can immediately search for their perfect opportunity at our network of more than 70,000 participating organizations.

Through the widget, nearly 100 volunteers have made their way to VolunteerMatch organizations to get involved.

Hats off to the team at CLIF BAR and all the GreenNotes artists for helping music fans put their passion for the environment into action!
