You may not know it by name, but most nonprofit organizations have fallen victim to the Overhead Myth, a misconception that spending money on administrative and fundraising costs is a bad thing. It’s been confusing donors for too long about what matters when judging a nonprofit, and it is harming our ability to solve the world’s problems.

About Our Speakers:
Jacob Harold Jacob Harold is the president and CEO of GuideStar, the largest source of data about nonprofits. Each year approximately 10 million unique visitors seek answers from GuideStar’s 1.3 billion pieces of data. Harold is one of three nonprofit leaders to spearhead the campaign to end the Overhead Myth.
Harold came to GuideStar from the Hewlett Foundation, where he led grantmaking for the Philanthropy Program. Between 2006 and 2012, he oversaw $30 million in grants which, together, aimed to build a 21st century infrastructure for smart giving. Before that, he worked as a consultant to nonprofits and foundations at the Bridgespan Group and as a climate change strategist for the David and Lucile Packard Foundation based at The Energy and Resources Institute in New Delhi, India. At the beginning of his careers he worked as a climate change campaigner for Rainforest Action Network and Greenpeace USA and as the organizing director at Citizen Works.
Ann Goggins Gregory joined Bridgespan in 2005, spending three and a half years in the strategy consulting practice before transitioning into a knowledge role. In her position, she leads the organization’s efforts to reflect on insights emerging from strategy consulting and plays a pivotal role in identifying opportunities for external knowledge sharing that arise from client work.
In her consulting work at Bridgespan, Ann worked with a number of education clients – including charter management organizations and a statewide public/private partnership focused on reforming high school education – and also worked on business plans for several leading youth-serving nonprofits. She has been an active contributor to knowledge projects since she joined the firm, co-authoring “Nonprofit Starvation Cycle” in the Fall 2009 issue of Stanford Social Innovation Review and “How Governments Can Spur High Charity Performance,” published in the Chronicle of Philanthropy (December 2009). Ann has helped lead Bridgespan’s national research on how nonprofits are “Managing in Tough Times.”
Greg Baldwin joined what is now VolunteerMatch in the spring of 1998 as its Chief Imagination Officer to finish hotwiring the Internet to help everybody find a great place to volunteer. Today, VolunteerMatch is a leader in the nonprofit world. Its popular web service is strengthening communities and organizations across the country by making it easier for good people and good causes to connect.
Greg appreciates the power of a big idea. He began his career at the Leo Burnett advertising agency where many big ideas were born and later tested his own as a co-founder of 2d Interactive, Inc. — a Boston-based technology start-up. Greg completed his undergraduate studies at Brown University in 1990 with a degree in Public Policy. He is a life-long volunteer and regularly speaks at nonprofit events and conferences on the subjects of volunteering, communication, and the Internet. He is also proud to serve as the Board Chair of the Council for Certification in Volunteer Administration.
