It’s been a year of historic happenings in the world of volunteering, and the inspirational events continue next month as 9/11 becomes an official National Day of Service and Remembrance.

September 11 was officially designated a service day as part of the Serve America Act, signed into law by President Obama in April. The idea is to create ways for American to remember the spirit of community that came out of 9/11 and pledge a commitment to volunteering and service in response.

VolunteerMatch makes it easy for any charitable organization to take part in this inspirational day.

  • Update your account at VolunteerMatch — While 9/11 is always a busy time at www.volunteermatch.org and our network of partner sites, we expect to host a quarter of a million visitors this year. Your nonprofit can participate simply by updating your VolunteerMatch account and being prepared to welcome new volunteers to your program.
  • Use VolunteerMatch to reach Serve.gov — The Administration will be directing people to Serve.gov. Luckily, when you post to VolunteerMatch, we make your listings available through a feed from data service All For Good. Just ignore messaging there that you have to “Post Your Projects” at Serve.gov. You don’t need to.
  • Share Your Story — Do you have volunteers who are inspired by 9/11? What about you? Share you stories about 9/11 service with us and we’ll include them in our membership communications to get others inspired to get involved.

To update your account and make sure your organization is involved in this historic 9/11 Day of Service, log in here.

  1. My name is marty denton and i am a songwriter from McGehee, Ark. I have many songs playing on charts etc. This is a song that I wrote for those families who lost love ones that day of 9/11. I believe we lost the true meaning of what happened when we are losing site of the people who lost their lives and have focused on the political and religious differences. I hope you will listen and pass this on. I have released it through my label, Trip Jct. Records and my promoters. Thanks, Marty
